The awakening of the Congolese youth in the context of the security crisis in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
For more than twenty years, the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been in the grip of a relentless armed conflict, which has resulted in the loss of millions of lives and the displacement of countless others. Despite numerous agreements and conventions, peace remains elusive, overshadowed by repeated violations, attacks, and massacres of civilians.
The conflict involves a multitude of actors, including rebel groups armed and supported by Rwanda. Rwanda exploits the DRC’s natural resources and commits genocide against the Congolese population.
Among these rebel factions, the infamous M23 stands out, initially defeated in 2013 only to re-emerge in 2021, taking advantage of the political and security instability in the DRC and with direct military support from Rwanda. The M23 has since extended its control, posing a serious threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC, while facing accusations of war crimes, including murder, rape, and kidnapping.
The devastating impact of this conflict on civilian populations
Thousands of people have been displaced, villages razed to the ground, and families torn apart. Since October 2023 alone, more than 2.5 million people have been displaced and hundreds have died.

Diplomatic efforts and global awareness
Discussions on the critical situation in the DRC took center stage at the 37th summit of the African Union, held in Addis Ababa on 17 and 18 February 2024. Leaders focused on the conflict, particularly in the eastern region, where the M23, supported by the Rwandan army, is waging an unjust war against the FARDC and the Wazalendo (‘Patriots’ in Swahili).
Despite diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis, the situation remains dramatic, with the M23, supported by the Rwandan army, continuing to commit atrocities against civilians. Massive population displacements have exacerbated the humanitarian emergency, prompting African leaders to call for a peaceful solution and commit to working together to resolve conflicts and political crises across the continent.
The indifference of the international community
The complicit indifference of the international community is highlighted, particularly in the light of the striking contrast between the responses to aggression in Ukraine and in the DRC. While the Russian invasion is constantly condemned, allegations of Rwandan aggression against the DRC receive little attention, despite evidence of the involvement of Rwandan troops and flagrant violations of international law.
The patriotic awakening of Congolese youth
In response, Congolese citizens have begun to express their anger and frustration through protests and demonstrations, both nationally and internationally, condemning the West’s silence on Rwandan actions and calling for an end to the conflict in the east of the country. They are also demanding recognition of the Congolese genocide, which has claimed more than six million lives since 1996.

Abidjan, where the leopards in black armbands make this gesture: “Right hand over the mouth and the two fingers of the left hand on the temple” to say “we are here and silence reigns”. During the playing of the Congolese national anthem, before the semi-final match of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) against Côte d’Ivoire. In doing so, they were expressing their solidarity with the victims of armed violence in the east of the country, in the grip of the Rwandan-backed M23.

Congolese player Héritier Luvumbu, who played for a Rwandan club, was expelled from Rwanda for a similar gesture, condemning the killings in eastern Congo.

Young Congolese demonstrated at the African Union summit to denounce events in the east of the DRC. These examples are just a tiny fraction of what Congolese youth are doing to condemn the barbarity of the M23 and their Rwandan support in the east of the DRC.

Impact of these events
These events have raised international awareness of the situation in the DRC and of the international community’s responsibility in managing this conflict. They have highlighted the devastating consequences of the war for civilians in the DRC.
Although the immediate results of these demonstrations are difficult to predict, they demonstrate the determination of Congolese youth to defend their rights and oppose the violence and abuses in their country. These demonstrations could also encourage the international community to take coordinated action to resolve the crisis in the DRC and protect civilians.
Conclusion
The resilience and commitment shown by Congolese youth in the face of adversity raise hopes of greater international recognition of the situation in the DRC and more effective action to put an end to the war and protect civilians.
